Abuse and the Mormon Church

I read a statement that the Mormon Church made about how the local leaders handled Garn's disciplinary situation. It is interesting how they did not mention how Mr. Garn was disciplined. However, they did mentioned that the women involved, who was a young girl at the time of the abuse, that she had an extramarital affair and was excommunicated from the church. That makes my blood boil. I don't know how Mr. Garn was disciplined, however I find it sick, wrong and unfair that the Mormon Church is t… Continue

Reflections of my mission president

I have been thinking for a couple minutes about my mission presidents. When I arrived in Florida, I did not care for my first mission president. His wife was very nice, but, he bothered me. I was idealistic and believed I was going to go out and serve others and love them into the church. When I arrived, we were ushered to the mission home, and told how important it was that we baptized every month. I was told that if the companionship baptized five people a month you and your companion would be… Continue

Guilt Free

I am been thinking today, as I was shoveling snow today, about guilt and how much guilt I possessed as a Mormon. I felt guilty about everything. For not doing my visiting teaching earilier in the month, for not reading my scriptures often enough, not attending the temple enough. I went to the temple once a month, When I could I would go once a week. I always felt I had helped someone accept the gospel on the other side of the veil. I had my mothers work done when I joined the church, worked hard… Continue

Not to worry

This little quote has been stuck in my mind for years.

If you spend your time worrying about the bee's,

you'll never get a chance to taste the honey.

Collecting nominations for the "Spawn of Brodie" awards!

Hi folks, I'd like to announce that the Mormon Alumni Association is hosting a set of "Spawn of Brodie" awards -- which are a little like oscars of emmys for X-Mormon online excellence!!

(Here the “X” in X-Mormon is a variable that can stand for whatever you like, such as “ex”, “post”, “former”, “cultural”, “New Order”,… Continue

It makes my blood boil, too. Incidents like this brings into the light of day the misogyny of the LDS church which beforetimes has been subtle and hidden. What really got me was how he said (with a straight face) that paying people off was how he ha…

Yes, the standing ovation was a bit troubling, almost as though they were partners in crime, cheering each other on. I'm glad that he resigned. I think it might be a foreshadowing that he knows more is likely to come to light.

My mother was born in Calgary. Blackmore is her maiden name. Whenever she got tired of my polygamous father we would go back to Canada and live with my awesome grandparents in Mountain View. Best memories of my life!

I guess I'm just saying, families are very diverse. Even though we were taught that we chose our family before we got here, nah, I don't really think so! :)

It's weird, but my sisters and I are products of polygamous parents and we were home-schooled, and yet I remember being pretty potty mouthed when we thought no-one was listening. :) Although, I have to say, terms like "poopy" were the only words tha…

Thanks for the affirmation Mary! The more I think about it, the more I realize just how ridiculous their expectations are. Of course it doesn't help that my sisters all home school their kids which just makes them that more "angelic", since they don…

Poopy? Crotch? sorry, but that's kinda funny, if it weren't so ridiculous. I was going to say what Skepticat said....those are NOT words you hear in movies! "Crotch" is what I have instructed my kids to call that area, rather than the other words, t…

Your son sounds normal to me. Even in the church, kids will be kids. (I was scout master for a year for about that age range... yes, they get goofy and they like to explore the boundaries of social acceptance. It's normal. And often hilarious.) As…
